What is Sacred Sexuality?
What if someone gave you a precious gift? And what if this gift was something very significant and powerful? Perhaps they told you that it was important to learn all that you could about the nature of this power and significance, so that you could use your gift wisely and responsibly. Would you then turn around and refer to your gift as something 'dirty?' Certainly not!
Well, for most of we humans in this world, our sexuality is just such a gift. It is something so significant and powerful in our lives that some refer to it as sacred. Now 'sacred' can take on many meanings to different people, but if you think of it as meaning something to be honored, respected, and representing the highest good in life, that's the idea I'm going for here.
There is a thought out there that our minds and our spirit are separate from our bodies. That one is our essence and the other a mere container in which we carry our essence around. I have begun to see myself differently, and I invite you to consider this as well.
While we are alive on this planet, we might as well think of ourselves as whole, integrated, with all parts working together for a common good. And it doesn't stop there. For we are also integral with the whole of nature. The health of the soil, the plants, animals, and so on is our health, for we depend on all those things for our own lives.
Therefore, it is up to us to lovingly care for all of this existence as best we can and disparage no part of it, if we can help it. All the way down to the tiniest bacteria that lives in the soil, that plays its part in making the nutrients available on which we all need to live, ultimately.
Part of the reward we gain from this caring are the sensations and feelings that we may enjoy, when we're in harmony with nature. Warm sunshine, fresh air and water, delicious and nourishing food, means of creative expression and accomplishment, and our opportunities for both solitude and connections with each other.
And as we live, we are charged with the task of keeping all these things in balance, as best we can. Our goal with food, for example is to neither starve ourselves, nor to over eat to the point where too much food makes us unhealthy. Each of us must find our own balance between solitude and connections with others.
And so it is with our sexuality. We are charged with the task of finding a balance between our experience of sexuality, and acting on that, and our time and energy for everything else that is life sustaining and enriching in our lives.
As with everything in life, there are times when finding and maintaining this balance may be difficult. There may be disappointments as well as fulfillment. Priorities might shift unexpectedly; we may decide to postpone one thing because something else takes priority. I think we are all in the process of learning how to do this throughout our lives.
